Author: Dan Flores

This is a saga-like non-fiction about Coyote, the mythical God and his counterpart on this earth, coyote, USA’s native canine.

Coyotes were and still are hunted because we have seen reflections of not-so-bright sides of us in them - this interpretation, maybe, is too psychoanalytic. Maybe it’s just a large act of ensuring territorial dominance of a larger, heavy-in-cortex mammal -humans. But the consequences were not trivial at any level. And Dan Flores captured both the act of the long-lasting hunt and the aftermaths through narrative fluidity without muting scientific backdrops.

Due to the sketches drawn to show the not-so-harmful nature of coyotes, a person who is not fond of coyotes may call out the writer as a softy, partial to coyotes. But I think the detailed paintings of how coyotes were treated in the USA may compensate for that.

This was one of those few books that was hard for me to abandon before reaching the last page, too well-written to get myself out of the prairie lands of this book. Yet to meet one of these junior wolves, in coyote.
